Establishing the friendship

Establishing the friendship

The friendly contacts with the Argentine city go back to the visit of the then Argentine ambassador Edgardo Malaroda in Bietigheim-Bissingen, who visited the city in December 2017 on the occasion of the women's handball world championship. A first visit by representatives of the city administration in Tupungato took place in February 2019. These first contacts have solidified and in October 2019, the declaration of friendship between the two cities was signed in the presence of the municipal council.

History

History

The city was founded in 1858. It is named after the nearby 6.550-meter high volcanic mountain. The name in the language of the indigenous people is "viewpoint of the stars."

Before the arrival of the Spaniards around 1550, the area of Tupungato was populated by the Huarpe ethnic group. Around 1480, the region was partially subject to the Incan Empire.

The climate at the foot of the Andes is dry and there is little rainfall. Nevertheless, the rivers from the mountains provide water.

The economy is shaped by its wine production. Numerous wineries also offer overnight stays. Agriculture, which also includes fruit and vegetable processing, is the most important economic sector. Walnuts from the area are also very famous. Since the rise of the Uco Valley, a true Argentine wine dorado, the city of Tupungato has been expanding continuously. Tupungato is one of the wealthiest cities in the country.
